Underage Drinking Has Been on the Decline Since 2002

There’s good news in a 2013 Monitoring the Future Study on Underage Alcohol Consumption that cites a decade-long survey (2002-2012) by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health on the prevalence rates of current, binge and heavy drinking among 12 to 20-year-olds.

The following stats reflect 2012 decreases in underage drinking:

  • Past month alcohol consumption among 12 to 20-year-olds has declined 16 percent since 2002.
  • Heavy drinking (5 or more drinks on 5 or more days within a thirty-day period) decreased 31 percent since 2002.
  • Underage binge drinking rates decreased 21 percent since 2002.

According to the survey, among older groups alcohol consumption in general decreases with increasing age, while in the U.S. underage drinking increases with increasing age.
