TV Series About a Downtrodden Defense Lawyer

My wife’s and my new favorite show is “Better Call Saul,” which according to Variety is cable’s “Top New Show of the Season.”

It’s a series about the trials and tribulations of Saul Goodman, an acerbic, bumbling, yet savvy criminal defense lawyer played by actor Bob Odenkirk.  A small world aside: My wife, back in the late 70s, would occasionally hang with some friends and Jonathan Banks, who plays bad guy Mike Ehrmantraut on the show. She knew he was an actor, but as she didn’t own a TV, had never seen any TV shows he’d acted in. She mainly remembers that he “had a lot of hair,” unlike his bald character on the show.

Lawyers Don’t Let Clients Talk to the Cops police black white clipart public domain

We’re still catching up on “Better Call Saul” episodes. Last night we watched episode 7 where Mike and his lawyer Saul are at the police station late at night. Saul identifies himself to the several officers as Mike’s lawyer, and Saul explains why his client had a certain item in his possession.

When a cop starts grilling Mike with questions, Saul doesn’t interrupt…at all. In fact, the cop continues grilling Mike as if the lawyer isn’t sitting right there. If I had been Saul, as soon as the cop started talking to my client, I would have interrupted, and explained as politely as possible that the detective cannot speak to my client or ask him any questions.

But Saul didn’t. Worse, client started to respond to cop’s interrogation and Saul still didn’t interrupt! In fact, Saul sat there quietly, not saying or doing anything. Unless a lawyer has a strategy for his client talking to the police, this is not how a criminal lawyer would have handled the situation.

Perhaps Saul really did have a strategy? I’ll know more when I watch the next episode.
